What is Gastroenterology?

Diseases of the digestive tract are responsible for the hospitalization of more people in the United States than any other group of disorders.

Gastroenterology involves the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the digestive tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, liver, gallbladder and biliary system. Some of the more common problems include peptic ulcer disease, heartburn and reflux, colon cancer/polyps, gallstones and inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
